Description

A rare condition in which the neck muscles tighten. This causes the head to twist to one side.

Overview

Torticollis can be present at birth, called congenital. This form most often is seen by 2 to 4 weeks after birth. This form might go away without treatment. Most often, torticollis is a symptom of an underlying condition, such as an infection. Or it can be the result of an injury.

Symptoms

The most common type causes the chin to pull toward the shoulder. Symptoms include not being able to move the head much, headache or neck pain.

Treatments

Treatment depends on the cause. Physical therapy is most often used. Injecting botulinum toxin into the affected muscles can reduce the symptoms of certain types of torticollis. Sometimes, surgery might be needed.
