Raynaud's phenomenon causes smaller arteries in the skin to narrow. This limits blood supply to these areas. Experts don't fully understand the cause, but these blood vessels seem to react too strongly to cold or stress.

Raynaud's tends to affect the fingers, toes, ears and tip of the nose. These areas might feel numb, cool or change colors in response to cold temperatures or stress. When blood flow improves, these areas may throb, tingle or swell.

Wear extra layers and cover areas of the body that tend to feel numb and cool in response to cold and stress. No other treatment is usually needed. Seek medical care if these areas of the body develop sores or infections.
