The growth of cells in the cervix that look different from typical cells.

Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia happens when cells that look different from typical cells grow in the cervix. The condition also is called cervical dysplasia. It is caused by human papillomavirus, also called HPV. It may go away on its own without treatment. Rarely, it can become cancerous.

Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia may not cause symptoms. Symptoms may develop if it leads to cervical cancer.

Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia is usually found with a cervical biopsy. When needed, treatment may include follow-up tests and procedures to remove the area of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia.
